The Artists Open Houses charity online art auction is now live and runs throughout May 2023
As part of its partnership with Artists Open Houses, 38 artists have donated 39 artworks into the charity auction. With starting bids ranging from £12.60 to £300 this is an affordable and accessible art auction.
People can view art in the AOH Festival in artists’ homes, as well as online, and place bids throughout May, with automatic notifications sent if you’re outbid and an opportunity to increase your bid if you want to.
Artworks include a broad range of media, including acrylic, oil, watercolour, pencil, ink, pastel, glass, mixed media and wood. Production methods include painting, screen printing; line drawing; photography; lino block; lino print; lino cut; print; monotype, jewellery and carbon engraving.
Art has been inspired by an eclectic range of experiences:
- physical – from Brighton icons to midsummer and calm horizons; the South Downs and nature around us, to North African stained glass doors/windows and aboriginal art.
- emotional and spiritual – from Buddhism to friendship, love, music, mythology; social injustice; dreams – the power of imagination and everyone’s need for care and nurture.
- personal – from the energy and charisma of a 90’s American wrestler to a son’s journey from the UK to Turkey dressed as Frodo the Hobbit.
Artists have been overwhelmingly supportive to Sussex Nightstop’s cause:
“This cause makes me very grateful for the roof over my head and the night I spent at the wonderful hotel, A Room with a View, overlooking Brighton Palace Pier. Our room had a roof terrace and my husband said ‘there you go, paint’. Little did we know that only a couple of weeks later he would suddenly pass away. I’m sure he would approve if this painting could raise money for Sussex Nightstop.”

“This little bird is similar to the one that was sold as part of the ING Discerning Eye Exhibition in 2021. But I’ve made another one especially for this auction because I would love it to make money for this important charity.”

“My Sussex garden is a favourite of mine but I would like to auction it for this cause.”

The partnership with Artists Open Houses and this fundraiser kicks off our 15th year of service to the Brighton & Hove community. Sussex Nightstop is the only service offering same day emergency accommodation for young people aged 16-25 facing homelessness. Our highly vetted volunteer hosts safely provide short stays for vulnerable young people, offering a bedroom, warm meals, access to laundry, WiFi, and kindness; whilst our support team help young people to find a home and access other services they need urgently.
“For me it is nice to know that I am making a positive difference, however small, to a young person’s current life experience.”
Brighton has the highest per capita rate of homelessness in the UK outside of London. Centrepoint research shows that 30,000 young people are currently homeless; a figure that doesn’t count the high numbers of young people sofa surfing, sleeping in cars, or living in other unsustainable situations. 1 in 78 people in our city are officially homeless. The cost-of- living crisis is putting more and more young people under pressure with their rent, and at risk of homelessness.
“I love the cleverness of Nightstop’s homestay offer and how the kindness of strangers can be so profoundly helpful to someone in temporary crisis. Since joining the board I’ve been privileged to see the depth of values being practiced daily by volunteers and our small staff team alike. It’s uplifting to be part of something so effective”
A safe night’s sleep can change a life. As a small charity with a big impact on young lives, every donation counts.
