We’re proud to partner Artists Open Houses and we’re moved by the continued, generous support of AOH artists, who kindly donate artworks to raise funds for Sussex Nightstop’s work supporting young people experiencing homelessness.
Now in its 3rd year, we’ve come up with a new name for our charity art auction:
Art with Heart runs alongside the May festival, with donated art showcased by artists in their open houses and also online, where people can place their bid. In an effort to make this an affordable art sale, visitors can pay the asking price at open houses and walk away with the artwork there and then. Or they can put in a cheeky bid of 90% of the sale price or more and see how they fare.

New for 2025 – Ned Hoskins, founder of Artists Open Houses
We’re excited to share the news that our art auction has been crowned by the king of AOH, Ned Hoskins, thanks to a generous donation from his wife Gerry.
Ned was born in London in 1939 and having grown up in Yorkshire, he returned in 1963 to study at the Royal College of Art, where he mixed with people like David Hockney and the Rolling Stones.
In 1980 he moved to Brighton and in 1981 opened his house as an exhibition space, because there was very little opportunity to display his work in the city. Ned wanted to make art accessible to everyone and thought that if people could see work hanging in his home, they would see that it would look good in their home too. The idea spread. Other groups sprang up around the city and now there are well over 190 Open Houses in Brighton & Hove during the Brighton Festival. One of the things we love about our partnership with AOH is that we share that generous spirit of welcoming people into homes…. just as artists welcome strangers into their open houses, our volunteer hosts open their doors to young people who need short stays while they’re temporarily homeless.
Sculpted by the Sea is a large acrylic on canvas painting – one of Ned’s famous seascape paintings. Over the years, the beach and the Sussex Downs were favourite themes of his…. he was fascinated by geology, particularly how wind and rain sculpts the landscape.
You can see Ned’s piece at the Regency Town House alongside the following free exhibitions:

Two very special open houses: The Sussex Nightstop House & Little Picture Palace
We’re very lucky this year to have the support of our board member, Chris Storey and Business Ambassador Richard Zinzan, who are generously hosting an open house in aid of Sussex Nightstop. They’ve lined up a talented mix of artists and media including Benedict Gubb; Diana Jazwinski; Ian Paterson; Novak James; Curio Studio; Plinth Home and Martine Jans Jewellery.

Little Picture Palace – Seven Dials Trail, 33 York Avenue BN3 1PJ
Little is typically generous of the very talented Sarah Arnett, who’s work is big, bold and luxe! A visit to this open house is a must if you want to enjoy a feast for your eyes, a warm welcome and loads of interesting things happening throughout the festival, including cocktails, tea and cake in the most fabulous garden setting – along with musical salons and meet the makers.
Sarah has been a big supporter of Sussex Nightstop each festival and this year, she is kindly hosting a display of ‘8 Miles Away’ from Tony Mills – Artist of the Year 2024. The story behind this collection is one of human kindness. An artist picking up his paint brushes to support people experiencing homelessness. The originals sold at a silent auction during a Covid lockdown, raising £28,000 for charity. Giclee prints will be on show and on sale on Saturday 3rd and Sunday 4th May at the Little Picture Palace. You can also view and buy online through Art with Heart but nothing beats seeing them up close, as the quality is superb… you can see the brush strokes, feel the emotion and lose yourself in the rich colours of his work.
You can hear Tony’s story in this two minute video.
We look forward to meeting you during the festival and want to thank everyone in advance for their generous support.
